Q: WHAT ARE THE MARKS LEFT BEHIND BY CUPPING?
A: The marks left on the skin after cupping are called “sha”. Sha is as an indication that toxins and stagnation are being pulled to the surface of the body, restoring healthy blood flow and qi to the muscles and organs. The color and severity of the marks give us clues into any stagnation that may be present. Over time, with regular treatment, the goal is to see lighter marks, as the stagnation lessens and healthy tissue is restored. The marks will usually fade within a few hours to a few days.
Q: DOES CUPPING HURT?
A: Cupping treatments shouldn’t be painful. Your practitioner will work to your level of comfort. Most people say that a cupping treatment feels really good and helps to relieve pain. Patients typically describe it as a sensation of “reverse deep tissue massage”, with the pressure upward instead of downward. After a cupping session, you may feel some mild muscle soreness, similar to after lifting weights or getting a deep tissue massage.
Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CUPPING?
A: Cupping helps relieve musculoskeletal pain by increasing blood flow, breaking up fascial adhesions and releasing trigger points. Additionally, according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), cupping dispels stagnation (stagnant blood and lymph), thereby improving qi flow, in order to treat respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis.
Q: WHAT CONDITIONS IS CUPPING USED TO TREAT?
A: Cupping can treat neck pain, shoulder pain, low back pain, hamstring pain and tightness and IT band pain. It also relieves coughing and congestion and can be used to help treat allergy symptoms, asthma and upper respiratory infection.
