3-Minute Allergy Acupressure Routine

This allergy season has been brutal in Portland! Many of our patients are reporting worse symptoms this year and some are even experiencing allergies for the first time. Try this three-minute acupressure routine to get relief!

1) Bi Tong

This point is located on each side of the nose in center of the nasiolabial fold (the little indentation on the side of your nose).

Push on both sides with your index fingers and then gently pull outward and upward, while taking deep breaths through your nose. Do this for 30-60 seconds.

Ahhhh... feel your airways opening?

2) Hegu

This point is located in the meaty part of tissue between your thumb and pointer finger.

Use the opposite pointer finger and thumb to pinch the area. Find a tender spot and hold the pressure for 30-60 seconds.

3) Zan Zhu

This point is located at the inner eyebrow in the orbital bone.

Feel for a small notch with your pointer finger, and then massage in a circular motion for 30-60 seconds.

Finally, if you have peppermint oil, you can dab a tiny amount on all 3 points as well as just under your nostrils to clear your sinuses.

Acupuncture helps with allergies by:

  • Regulating the immune system: Acupuncture modulates the immune response, reducing the exaggerated reaction to allergens.

  • Reducing inflammation: Allergies often involve an inflammatory response. Acupuncture reduces inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses, alleviating symptoms such as congestion and runny nose.

  • Alleviating symptoms: Acupuncture relieves common allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, and watery eyes by stimulating the release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals.
