With the wildfire crisis threatening the entire state, it feels like we have all been in a constant state of fight or flight for the last week. Here are some quick tips to deal with the smoke and unhealthy air quality.
Stay indoors as much as possible until the Air Quality Index improves. Today it is still rated “very unhealthy”. DEQ expect the air quality advisory to last at least through Thursday. Keep pets inside as well.
Stay hydrated - Smoke irritates your eyes, nose and throat. Make sure to drink at least 64oz of water per day to keep your nose and mouth moist and make it easier to breathe.
Eat nutrient-dense foods - Help your immune system by fueling it with foods rich in Vitamin A (dark leafy greens, carrots, squash and sweet potatoes), Vitamin C (citrus, peppers and tomatoes) and Vitamin E (wild-caught fatty fish).
Get enough rest - You may find that you need to sleep in or take a nap. Being in a constant state of stress can tax your entire system. Allow yourself permission to rest.
Keep moving - Although you want to avoid exercising outside or doing anything too strenuous, staying active will help your body and mind get through this time of stress. Try 10 minutes of yoga or meditation each morning.
Set your AC to recirculate mode and if possible use an air purifier with a HEPA filter. Avoid vacuuming as this will circulate the dust and particles.
Please remember to take it easy on yourself during this challenging time and remember to check in on friends and family. If you need support with stress, sleep, diet or pain, We have openings available next week for acupuncture + herbal medicine consults!
